have been studied by world-wide recognised scientists,
such as F. BENTON in 1885, GOETZE, RUTTNER, Brother Adam, TOWNSEND and many others later on, who all spent a few years in Slovenia.
Between 1982 and 1985, studies were undertaken by the NATIONAL SLOVENE COMMITTEE FOR THE SELECTION OF CARNICA BEES, an agency of the Slovene Ministry of Agriculture. Dr. Mag. POKLUKAR, responsible for the selection program as well as for the protection of Slovene Carnica bees in the bee keeping area owned by M. Zdesar, has directed those experiments.
The experiments were implemented on:
- 20 colonies containing Italian bees (from Ferrara, a suburb of Bologna)
- 18 colonies containing grey Caucasian bees originating from the Georgian mountains
- 68 colonies containing Carniolan bees where used as reference (control colonies).
(Black bees were not used because of their excessive aggressivity.)
The exit of drones from the colonies was prevented during the inseminating period. The larger colonies were altered, so there were equal in strength with the rest, grouped together and shared the same nectar sources. All of the colonies received similar attention.
Attention was drawn into:
- the quantity of honey produced after a queen was introduced
- the tendency to swarm
- irritability and aggressiveness
- nosemia and dysentery resistance
